RE: going to K.C. next weekend, need cold weather advice

All of the previous advise sounds good and helpful. They just announced on the weather that we will have a fairly nice day on Tuesday but then the temps are supposed to drop out of sight and they are now talking about some measurable snowfall. They have 9" of snow on the ground 50 miles west of Salina right now and our ground is covered in the Leavenworth area. You will probably be just fine if you will keep your furnace running and you run a droplight or something similar to your water control compartment. Do not leave any water hoses connected. I enclose our water compartment area on the inside with Reflectix Insulation and then run a droplight with a 60 watt bulb and it protects it just fine. You might stop by Home Depot or Lowes and pick up a roll of Reflectix and wrap the area around your water compartment. It comes in several different sizes. I got the 24" X 25' long size and it works very good. Have fun and enjoy your stay in our area. Larry

RE: Passport America

I would certainly agree that it is a real good investment. We have had it for several years and it has always paid for its self in about 4-5 days of usage. You will encounter occasional limitations from time to time but it is well worth it in the long run. Good Luck, Larry

RE: towing a sport trac

Don, I would encourage that you take your Sport Trac to your local Ford Dealership and ask them to install the neutral Tow Kit that your vehicle needs. We had one installed in our 07 Sport Trac before we took delivery. As I recall the kit was around $35. and the installation was around $75. It is an very easy process to dis-engage or to re-engage the driveshaft. We bought a blue Ox baseplate with the semi-concealed connections and then we bought one of the Ready Brake Towbars with the built-in supplemental brake system. It has worked just great and we have used it for about 20K miles so far. With it you do not have to purchase one of the seperate braking systems. PM me if you have any questions. Good Luck, Larry

RE: "wallydocking" At Cabelas in Hamburg Pa?

We have stayed overnight several different times in the designated parking area at the Cabela's Store in Kansas City. The management has encouraged that we stay on each occasion. They have a nice oversized parking area large enough for RV's and 18 wheelers. They also have a very nice and clean dump station. This store is located across the road from the new Nascar race track and is in the new Legends Shopping Center area. This is just west of I435 and about a mile north of I70. We live about 50 miles north and west of this area, but it makes a very good launching point for us when we prepare to depart on a lengthy trip. Larry

RE: S.E. Mass to Disney World Fort Wilderness

Hi Bob, If you travel along I95 in the vacinity of Savannah, GA, here is a pretty nice campground that we have stayed at a couple of times. It is just 2 1/2 miles west of I95. Turn west on Georgia Highway 204 and it is on the south side of that highway. It is called the Savannah Oaks RV Resort. It is just a few miles back in the opposite direction to the downtown Savannah area. Good Luck and have fun. Larry

RE: Kansas City

JFG and Skip are both correct. Get on 670 at the east end of the metro area and then get back on I70 just a few miles across town. At noon the traffic should not be bad at all. However from about 2:30 to 8 PM will be a really bad choice of timing. Good luck and be careful, Larry

RE: Starting out

Like others have indicated I also would highly recommend that you try out living in a RV for a while before you actually sell the farm, so to speak. It could be a very ugly and sad ordeal if you were to sell your home at a todays "Low Ball" pricing and jump into the motor home of your choise and then discover that "Full Timing" is not quite what you thought that it might be. Sort of like selecting a soft drink. You wouldn't want to buy a whole semi-truck load, until you were sure that it was the right one to satisfy your taste. Just my thoughts. Good luck, Larry

RE: Progressive Insurance

We have had Progressive insurance on our Motor Home for about 4 years now. We had one semi-major claim about 8 months into our first year. It was a result of my foolish and careless backing and amounted to about $7,500. in damages. We felt that they really handled our claim in an outstanding manner, they were very fast to handle everything and we were extremely well pleased. My rates did increase slightly for the next yearly period, but did relax back to the original level ever since that first yearly period. Overall we have really been quite impressed and very well pleased. You will always hear of both good and bad experiences with insurance company's. I think that each situation, claim or opinion is unique in itself and will vary significantly from each persons perspective. Finding the right insurance company that best fits your needs is not an easy endeavor and is often very confusing and most often extremely frustrating. Look at all of the provisions and make your best decision. Good Luck, Larry

RE: Zero out all Hard Drive info before donating computer

Best be very cautious. I have had extensive experience with this endeavor. I supervised an organization for the Department of the Army for several years. We had a program mandated by the Elder President Bush and then Clinton. It was for the donation of assorted excess IT equipment to schools. With the continuous technology advances in the computer industry the Army was always buying the very latest, greatest and most advanced equipment available. As we brought all of this new equipment into our inventory literally by the tens of thousands on a repetitive basis we had unbeliveably large numbers of very good equipment that in many instances was only a few months old. In many instances we had brand new items that had not even been put into use, but because of the rapid advances it was considered old school and was earmarked for disposal. In concert with this endeavor was a requirement that we could not actually donate any equipment that could possibly have any sensitive or militarily classified information. We had a team of IT experts that were responsible to insure that the computers and any other equipment that had any memory capabilities were purged and cleaned. They had lots of different tools and software programs designed to degause or wipe out any and all of that information. We did that for a couple of years and then they concluded that this was still not totally removing ever facet of information. So then we embarked on a real pain in the A$$ tasking as we were then required to surgically extract the hard drives from every item. Then once the hard drive was removed and certified clean, we were allowed to proceed with the donation. Then we had to actually destroy all of the hard drives. We had to purchase an actually crusher apparatus that would totally destroy the hard drives. Larry

RE: Kansas Turnpike/Towanda Service Center

Jimo is probably legally correct in saying that you can not turn around and go in a different direction at any one of the Service center stops along the Kansas Turnpike. I must say that we have actually done it several different times. We never travelled very many miles from entering, turning around and then exiting. The toll attendant would always just charge us for the minimum fee from the nearest entry point. Regarding your situation at the Towanda service center, the exit to the south is the Andover exit and the north exit is El Dorado. If you meet at Towanda and are wanting to travel south then I would continue northbound and then take the Eldorado exit and then turn around and enter once again an go south. Your wife and niece could do the same thing but would go south to the Andover exit and then make the exit and entry at that point. Good luck and safe travels, Larry

RE: We are going to Boston

To answer the questions about us spending the entire week in the Boston area. No we are only planning on spend a couple of days within the immediate Boston area. We are thinking that we will travel northward up towards Burlington Vermont to see some of the beautiful foilage areas and then travel eastward over to the Portland Maine area and then come down along the coast back to the Boston area. We are going to Boston

Our big 45th Anniversary outing. The DW has always wanted to go up into the New England area and we have just never gone in that direction. So my two daughters and I have secretly got us lined up with a flight into Boston on the 7th of October. We have a rental car reserved for pick up at the airport. We fly out of Boston on the 14th of October. I would have much rather taken the motor home up there, but it would have taken us much longer travel time and it would have been quite costly to drive. We dispise living out of suitcases, but guess that we can manage for a few days. Now the big decision is on where all to try to go and what to see and do in that 6 or 7 day period. I was originally going to wait until the last day or two before I told the DW about this trip, but the daughters convinced me that I should tell her well in advance so that she can do any last minute shopping and preparing to go, before I just drop this news on her. So I did present her with this news last evening. She was totally baffled about the trip and surprised that we had done all this without letting her know. Now she is trying to brainstorm this trip concept and think all about what we should take and what we should try to do. I had gathered up a bunch of assorted information about that region so that we could plot out a rough agenda. Now we are having problems trying to decide where we should go first and what all we should try to do. I realize that we will not have sufficient time to see or visit the entire area or do everything that there is available to do. Any other suggestions or recommended routes to follow or ones to avoid would be great appreciated. We are not certain now about our clothing requirements in that area at that time of the year. We are presuming that sweaters and jackets would be nice to have. That is rather hard to believe since we are still wearing shorts and sandals here in the Kansas City area. Thanks for your ideas and recommendations. Barb and Larry

We would highly second AnnorTom's nice comments about the Pelican Roost Campground. It was first class and a very beautiful area. We'd love to go back there again someday soon. Larry

RE: 6 volt batteries

We just replaced our 4 six volt house batteries. Got the Interstate U2200 models. Bought them from an RV Dealer in Olathe, Kansas and they cost us $128.50 each installed. Their advertised price was $148.50. Larry

Question about Battery Caps

We recently had to replace all 4 of our 6 volt deep cycle house batteries. These new batteries are the Interstate Workaholic U2200 models and they have a (new to me) different style of caps that I have never seen before. Each battery has a single style twist on filler cap. The cap fits down into all three ports and then you flip or twist the top of the unit and all 3 of the caps twist or lock into place as one single unit. I have never seen such a gizmo. My problem or question is that with all four of these batteries interconnected and with all the wires going back and forth from battery to battery, the wires are all in the way of removing this new style cap assembly. Have other folks encountered this same problem and what did you do to remedy this problem? I want to be able to routinely check the fluid levels and add distilled water as needed, but if I can not remove the caps without having to remove the battery cables, that will be a problem. I went back to the RV dealer who installed the batteries and they were equally as baffled as I am. They are contacting the manufacturer to seek a solution, but have not got an answer as yet. Appreciate any suggestions that you could offer. Larry

RE: Wal Mart in Cameron, MO.

Larry, You might even consider going about 5 miles south of Cameron, just off of I35. There is a very nice little State Park there. It is the Wallace State Park. It is easy off and onto the interstate. Just another option to consider. Another Larry
